BACKGROUND

Baan Dek Foundation (BDF) is a non-profit, non-political and non-religious organization based in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Our core mission is to provide access to education, health, and social services to the most vulnerable children living in urban slums and construction site camps in Thailand.

Over the last 10 years of grassroots work originating in Chiang Mai, Baan Dek Foundation established key partnerships with construction companies and real estate developers to build sustainable impact in construction site camps and improve the lives and access to basic services of construction workers and their children.

Through the recent launch of theBuilding Social Impact initiative, BDF seeks to scale up and reach a wide adoption of this framework and tools in the construction sector.

Job Overview

Baan Dek Foundation is currently looking for a professional and dedicated locally-based (Bangkok) Advocacy Coordinator who will commit to contribute to BDF’s overall mission and provide specialized support for children and their families who reside in construction site camps. The position will work under the direct supervision of the Director of Systemic Impact. The Advocacy Coordinator will play an essential role in the success of the BSI Initiative by advocating and pushing for an enabling environment in which the construction sector can adopt better business practices. This includes advocating for both a robust regulatory framework and pushing for effective implementation of existing policies at the ground level. The ideal candidate will be equipped with the skills to develop and implement the systemic impact advocacy strategy as well as cultivate and manage stakeholders crucial to the success of the BSI Initiative.

Role Description

Key responsibilities will entail but are not limited to the following:

  • Leading the development and implementation of the advocacy strategy of the Systemic Impact program with Thai public duty bearers to position the Building Social Impact Initiative as a best practice in the operationalization of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs) as well as the Children’s Right and Business Principles (CRBPs) in the Thai property and construction sector.
  • Identifying strategic key advocacy points  and developing key content such as advocacy briefs, case studies and learning briefs.
  • Leading the coordination of events, meetings, fora and visits with public and non-governmental stakeholders
  • Conduct regular analysis of public and non-profit stakeholders, providing updates and analysis of developments of the business and human rights agenda in Thailand and ensuring the alignment of the initiative with relevant frameworks and government priorities
  • Cultivating and managing working relationships with Thai public duty bearers at ministerial level, provincial and local level, in particular the Ministry of Justice
  • Identify and cultivate networking and alliance building with relevant UN agencies and NGOs where mandates converge
  • Representing the organization at various events with government and non-governmental representatives to advocate for better standards in the construction sector and promote the BSI Initiative among relevant stakeholders
  • Supporting data analysis and remaining up-to-date with current affairs and construction Industry sector trends to discuss these points at high-level and strategic meetings
  • Navigating through multilevel networks to implement, develop and strengthen BDF’s stakeholder strategy plan
  • Contributing to developing the communications strategy
  • Ensuring proper implementation of planned activities in line with donor commitments
  • Contributing to the external reporting to donors and partners

Qualifications

Nationality: Thai nationality

Language requirements: Excellent command of written and spoken English and Thai

Education/ Experience:

  • Studies: Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in international relations, political science, law, social sciences or a related discipline
  • Working knowledge and skills: Knowledge of business and human rights, CRBPs and sustainability is a strong asset
  • Professional experience: At least 3-5 year experience working in engaging, lobbying and collaborating with the Royal Thai Government, UN agencies and the NGO ecosystem in Thailand and Experience in developing and implementing communication and advocacy strategies

Other skills and competencies:

  • Demonstrated management and coordination skills, including the ability to plan and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrate strong management skills with the ability to gain credibility with senior government representatives while challenging the status quo
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to effectively communicate, including experience in a cross-cultural environment and an international setting
  • Team work
  • Stakeholder engagement skills and ability to collaborate effectively, including in cross-cultural or multicultural environments
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Project management skills are considered as an asset

Working hours: Full time – Monday to Friday with occasional weekend and evening
